Has WFH improved productivity and increased workplace wellbeing?

There's a lot of buzz about working from home and the productivity that comes with it. Let's shed some light on the facts.

As pandemics sweeping the world, the work-from-home concept is receiving a facelift. Companies around the world discover new methods to work without human contact. This new way of working has both positive and negative implications on the productivity of organisations as well as the employee.

COVID 19 and workplace wellbeing

Since the pandemic, to avoid human contact employees have been asked to work from home by their employers.

As hyped in the media, working from home and increased productivity may not be entirely true. Working from home has its own set of productivity issues that are rarely mentioned. The concerns that surround the W concept can be addressed with workplace wellbeing solutions.

WFH challenges

Working from home has its drawbacks. Employers, as well as employees, encounter different challenges and productivity issues that affect both.

Companies face challenges like

  • Collaboration
  • Different time zones
  • Different locations
  • Building trust
  • Managing remote teams
  • Tracking employee’s performance
  • Good employee experience

Challenges faced by employees

Workplace wellbeing assessment questionnaires have revealed challenges encountered by employees. These include

  • Loneliness
  • The blurred line between work and personal life
  • Distractions at home
  • Taking a break

Work Hours

In the early days of the pandemic, there was an increase in total hours worked.

Working outside of normal business hours played a big role in this rise. The situation shifted after a couple of months. As work from home becoming new normal no segregation between personal life and work life was observed. Employees began to realise that wfh means being available at all times.

The productivity issues started surfacing due to employees spending hours in formal meetings and zoom video conferences etc. Many industries are attempting to boost productivity downfall with aid of workplace wellbeing solutions.

Mental fatigue

There are several reasons why work from home can cause mental fatigue. Incessant zoom calls, and bosses asking to work for more hours are causing mental exhaustion. Distractions due to spouse working next table, children running around and with domestic responsibilities, women felt more drained.

Workplace wellbeing assessments are essential to evaluate the stress and mental fatigue of employees. Workplace wellbeing solutions are approved strategies to fix home office exhaustion.

Actual useful time

The findings of workplace wellbeing assessments revealed actual useful time of work is reduced. Factors like frequent interruptions, technology fatigues and lacking office environments added to the poor performance of employees. Companies were downsized and their salaries were slashed. Constant anxiety about financial insecurities leads to productivity issues.

On the other hand, some began working secretly for two companies that reduced actual working hours.

To sum up various research on productivity and working hours in work from home environments have been undertaken. The results revealed an increase in working hours and quality of work in the initial months. As the pandemic started lingering with an uncertain future the statistics reversed.
